How To Get a GMRS License
Getting a GMRS license (as an individual) requires a few straight-forward steps on the FCC website and only costs $35 for a 10-year license.
Before applying for a GMRS license:
- If you don't have a CORES login: Start at Step 1 below.
- If you have a CORES login but no FRN: Start at Step 2.
- If you already have a CORES login and FRN: Start at Step 8.
Steps to Apply
1. Register for a CORES (Commission Registration System) username: Register on CORES
Tip: What is CORES?
CORES is the FCC's system for managing your account and licenses. You'll use it to create your FCC account and link your FRN and licenses under one login.
2. After account creation, Log into CORES.
3. Click 'Register New FRN'.
4. Register as an individual and confirm your address is within the U.S.
5. Select 'Individual FRN'.
6. Fill out all required information on the form and submit.
7. You will receive your FRN (FCC Registration Number).
Tip: Why do I need an FRN?
An FRN is required to apply for any FCC license, including GMRS. It's like your FCC account number.
8. Now go to the License Manager: Login to License Manager
9. Enter your FRN and password, click Submit.
10. Click 'Apply for a New License'.
11. From the drop-down menu, select 'ZA - General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS)'.
12. Request Type: STA? (No), Fee Exemption? (No), then Continue.
Tip: What is an STA?
STA (Special Temporary Authority) allows for temporary operation in special cases. For normal GMRS licensing, you do not need this. Select 'No'.
Tip: Am I exempt from filing or regulatory fees?
No. As an individual, you are not exempt from paying the $35 GMRS license fee. Select 'No' for both exemption questions.
13. Fill out your personal/contact information.
Tip: Privacy tip (Home address vs PO Box)
The address you enter will be publicly visible on the FCC database. Many people use a PO Box instead of a home address for privacy.
14. Answer the felony question honestly (Yes/No) and Continue.
15. Review the Summary page carefully. Edit if necessary. Then click "Continue to Certify".
16. Pay the $35 fee when prompted. Sometimes it takes a few hours or even a day for payment to reflect. Don't panic — you will get confirmation once the FCC processes it.
Tip: Payment delays
17. Wait for FCC grant approval. Once granted, you will receive your GMRS callsign by email and it will be available in ULS.
After Approval
Congratulations! You now have a GMRS license valid for 10 years. Remember to renew it when the time comes. You can start using your GMRS callsign immediately after grant.
